Home brewing is an exciting way to create delicious, personalised beer at home. If you’re starting out, or looking to improve your home brew skills, you’ll see three types of beer kits: Extract, Part Grain, and All Grain. At Dark Rock Brewing, we offer all three, each designed for different skill levels, equipment setups, and brewing goals.

All Dark Rock beer kits are available in 8 pint small batch kits or 40 pint full size kits, making it easy to brew whether you want to try a new recipe or produce a full batch. Plus, every kit includes premium quality ingredients, the same types used by professional breweries. Along with these are easy-to-follow instructions for a straightforward, enjoyable home craft brewing experience.

In this guide, we’ll break down the differences so you can choose the right kit and brew delicious beer at home, no matter your experience level.

🍺 Extract Beer Kits (Beginner Friendly)

Best for: First time brewers, simple brewing, minimal equipment

Extract beer kits are the quickest and easiest way to start brewing at home. All the hard work has already been done for you. Sugars have been extracted into malt extract (liquid or dried). You simply dissolve it in water, top up, add yeast and ferment.

Advantages ✅

  • Quick and easy to brew
  • Minimal equipment required
  • Consistent results every time
  • Perfect for beginners

Considerations ✖

  • Limited control over flavour and body
  • Less hands on brewing experience

Typical Brew Day

  • 1 hour

Dark Rock Extract Kit Ranges

  • 8 Pint Small Batch Series: Ideal for beginners or those with limited space, producing 8 pints (1 gallon) per batch.
  • 40 Pint Session Series: Perfect for full size brewing, recommended to use with our beer kit enhancers for best results.
  • 40 Pint Signature Series: Our latest kits including 3kg of commercial grade malt extract. No additional sugar or enhancer needed.

For new brewers, starter kits are also available in 8 pint and 40 pint sizes, so you can begin your home brewing journey with everything you need.

🍺 Part Grain Beer Kits (Intermediate Level)

Best for: Brewers wanting more control without going fully all grain

Part grain kits bridge the gap between extract and all grain brewing. You still use malt extract as the main sugar source, but you also steep specialty grains to add fresh malt character, colour, and complexity. Hops are added at various stages for bitterness, aroma, and flavour.

This gives you more involvement in the brewing process while keeping things manageable.

Advantages ✅

  • More flavour control than extract kits
  • Improved aroma, colour, and body
  • Great stepping stone to all grain brewing

Considerations ✖

  • Slightly more equipment required
  • Longer brew day

Typical Brew Day

  • 2–3 hours

Dark Rock Part Grain Kits

All recipes are available in 8 pint and 40 pint sizes. You only need basic brewing equipment, plus a 12 litre boiling pan and thermometer, which are available in our Part Grain Upgrade Kit.

Part grain kits are ideal if you want to start crafting beers with more character while building your brewing skills.

🍺 All Grain Beer Kits (Advanced & Enthusiast)

Best for: Serious home brewers seeking full control

All grain brewing is the traditional method used by commercial breweries. Instead of using extract, you mash crushed grains yourself to convert starches into fermentable sugars.

This method gives you complete control over flavour, body, colour, and alcohol content, making it the most rewarding brewing experience.

Advantages ✅

  • Maximum creative control
  • Authentic brewing process
  • Ability to fine-tune recipes
  • Often produces the best flavour results

Considerations ✖

  • Requires more equipment (mash tun, brew kettle, straining bag, etc.)
  • Longer, more complex brew day
  • Steeper learning curve

Typical Brew Day

  • 4–6 hours

Dark Rock All Grain Kits

All recipes are available as 8 pint small batch kits or 40 pint full-size kits. Small batch all grain kits can be brewed using a stove top pan and straining bag, making it perfect for learning on a smaller scale. For the ultimate all grain experience, we recommend the Grainfather G30 All-in-One Brewing System.
