Home brewing is the process of making your own beer at home using simple ingredients like malt, hops, yeast, and water. It allows you to create a wide range of beer styles, from creamy stouts to hoppy IPAs, without needing professional equipment.

Many people start with our small batch 8 pint kits, which are ideal for learning the basics without committing to a large volume. As you gain confidence, you can move on to larger 40 pint kits for better value and bigger batches.

To start home brewing, you’ll need a few essential pieces of equipment, including a fermentation vessel, an airlock, sanitiser, syphon kit and bottles or a keg for storage. Many beginners choose a home brewing starter kit, which includes most of this equipment along with ingredients and step-by-step instructions, making it much easier to get started. Small batch 8 pint kits are especially popular with beginners because they require less space, less time, and less upfront commitment than larger 40 pint kits.

The cost of starting home brewing in the UK starts at £25 for a basic starter kit. This initial investment covers most of the equipment you’ll need. After that, recipe kits are relatively affordable, meaning each batch of beer often works out much cheaper per pint compared to buying craft beer or real ale from shops or pubs.

If you’re new, small 8 pint kits are a cost effective way to try the hobby without investing in large quantities. Once you’re comfortable, upgrading to 40 pint kits can significantly reduce the cost per pint, making home brewing much more economical in the long run.

Brewing beer at home usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks from start to finish. The actual brewing process takes a less than an hour, followed by 1–2 weeks of fermentation. After that, the beer is bottled or kegged and left to condition for another 1–2 weeks to develop flavour and carbonation. Some styles may benefit from longer aging.

Ales are generally the easiest beers for beginners to brew because they ferment well at room temperature and don’t require complex equipment. Popular beginner choices include pale ales, golden ales, and stouts. These styles are forgiving, quick to ferment, and produce great results even on a first attempt. Many first time brewers start with a small 8 pint kit, which makes the process more manageable and less overwhelming. Once you’re confident, you can scale up to a 40 pint kit and experiment with different beer styles.

Yes, home brewing is completely legal in the UK as long as the beer is made for personal use. You can brew, bottle, and share your beer with friends and family without any licence. However, if you plan to sell your homebrew, you’ll need the appropriate licences and must follow UK alcohol regulations and tax requirements.

Home brewing isn’t just limited to beer. You can make a wide range of other drinks using similar equipment and fermentation techniques. Wine is one of the most popular options, and a premium quality bottle can often be made for less than £2, making it a cost effective alternative to shop bought wine.

You can also make cider and mead, both of which are great options for beginners and experienced brewers alike. In addition, we supply a range of distilling equipment and flavourings that allow you to create your own spirits, including vodka, whisky, rum, gin and liqueurs.

All of these drinks can be made in both small and large batches, and in most cases use the same core equipment as home brewing beer, making it easy to expand your setup and experiment with new styles as you gain experience.
