Rice Hulls – 250g
When brewing high adjunct/gluten free beers with all grains, we use Rice Hulls as a filtration aid. It helps to prevent a stuck mash/sparge without imparting any flavour or colour to the finished beer. Usage should be 5% or less of the total grain bill.
Before starting the mash process, mix Rice Hulls in the grain. Add around 250g of Rice Hulls to the grain. This will help keep the grain bed open and allow the wort to filter through, rather than lying on top. We use these when we are making a beer with over 5.5Kg of grains.
Why use Rice Hulls?
In beer making, we use Rice Hulls for several reasons:
- Prevent Stuck Mash: Rice hulls help prevent a stuck mash, which is when there’s no wort exiting the tun. They create space around the mash particles, allowing the wort to flow out of the mash tun.
- Filtration: Rice hulls act as a filtration agent. They do not add any flavour to the wort and are an excellent solution to prevent a stuck sparge or lautering process.
- High Gravity Beers: Rice hulls are particularly useful when brewing high gravity beers, which have a higher concentration of fermentable sugars and result in a higher alcohol content. These beers require a larger amount of grains, leading to a thicker mash that is more difficult to filter.
- Improve Wort Filterability: Rice hulls improve the filterability of the wort by preventing the grains from clumping together. They create channels through which the wort can flow freely, reducing the viscosity of the wort and making it easier to filter.
- No Flavour Contribution: Rice hulls do not contribute flavour or colour to the beer and do not break down in the mash.
- Structure in Mash Tun: Rice hulls provide structure within the mash tun and help keep the grain bed free flowing and free of dough balls.
