What is Barley Wine?

Barley wine is a type of strong ale brewed with a large amount of malted barley. Despite the name, it contains no grapes or wine. Brewers design it to deliver wine-like strength and complexity while still remaining a beer. People usually serve barley wine in small quantities due to its strength. It often comes in small bottles or special limited releases.

Key characteristics

• High alcohol content, usually 6%–12% ABV
• Deep amber to dark copper colour
• Full-bodied and rich mouthfeel
• Sweet malt backbone with caramel, toffee, and dried fruit notes
• Low to moderate hop bitterness

Taste profile

Barley wine often tastes rich and warming. It develops flavours like raisin, plum, fig, and burnt sugar. Many versions improve with age, similar to fine wine.

ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS REQUIRED:

To make this kit, you will either need 1Kg Brewing Sugar or 1Kg Lager Beer Kit Enhancer (Preferred) . Later, you will also need sugar or carbonation drops to prime the keg or bottles for the secondary fermentation. We also advise using finings like Starbrite to ensure your lager clears quickly and the sediment sticks to the bottom on the bottle or keg.
