Description
Woodfordes Nog
Woodfordes Norfolk Nog was the winner of the 2009 World Beer Award’s “World’s Best Old Ale”. Norfolk Nog is full of a roast malt bitter character which dominates the nose and palate and contributes to a long dry finish. Hints of fruit, rich caramel and malt add satisfying complexity to this beautiful dark porter ale.
Woodfordes top quality beer kits have been developed in conjunction with the Woodfordes brewery using their original grist formulation to accurately emulate the individual character of the Woodfordes commercial beers. Woodfordes has grown from a small scale brewery to become one of the largest and most respected new cask ale brewers who started up in the early 1980’s. This was when beer drinkers finally began to steer away from the relentless blandness of the larger brewers products.
Pioneers firstly turned to home brewing and secondly to commercial production of their original recipes. Woodfordes has an exceptional reputation and is recognised for their outstanding quality and flavours. Regional variations in water quality may have a subtle influence on the taste of the final brew.
DO YOU NEED ANY OTHER INGREDIENTS?
This is an all malt beer kit, and you do not need any additional sugar or beer kit enhancer to make the kit. However, you will need some sugar or carbonation drops to prime the bottles or keg for a secondary fermentation.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?
Basic beer making equipment (5g fermenter, airlock, syphon tube with sediment trap, hydrometer, Suresan sanitiser, bottles or barrel). These are available under the starter kit section on this website.
TIPS

We strongly recommend using Pure Brew with this kit to achieve commercial-quality beer. Pure Brew acts as a professional beer enhancer and improves fermentation performance. It feeds yeast essential nutrients and supports strong fermentation, even in low oxygen conditions. Additionally, it treats brewing water and removes chlorine and chloramine. These compounds can cause unwanted “homebrew” flavours in the finished beer. Brewing water quality plays a key role in final beer quality. However, many homebrewers often overlook this important factor. Pure Brew helps you easily condition water and improve fermentation results.
Furthermore, beer finings improve clarity and final presentation. Harris Beer Brite clears beer quickly and helps sediment settle at the bottom. This works especially well for bottles and barrels after fermentation. If you use Corny Kegs, clear the beer as much as possible before kegging. Finings help sediment and haze particles drop out more efficiently before packaging. Harris Starbrite provides a highly effective vegan-friendly fining option. As a result, homebrewers achieve clearer, better-looking, and better-tasting beer.
For additional flavour why not try adding our chocolate nibs to give your dark porter ale a unique chocolate aroma. The chocolate nibs can be found on our websited under the ‘Dried Ingredients’ section.

It’s a nice dark ale but not what I was expecting as I was thinking it was going to be like a stout .
It’s worth giving a go for something that’s a bit different, but I don’t think I would brew it again as I got bored of it and started mixing it half and half with the Harris Mild which made the taste better for me.
I do a batch of this when I fancy something different, not as “in your face” as a full on stout but nice for evening drinking..
Christmas time I brew this, I lock the doors to keep relatives out!
This is an outstanding, well-bodied dark ale with lovely liquorice notes and a sumptuous tan head. I think I’ve brewed this about four or five times now and it never disappoints. 500g of extra dark DME lifts the ABV and makes it even more satisfying. I ‘pimped’ this kit in August as my Christmas ale with 500g of extra dark DME, 500g of soft dark brown sugar and some nutmeg and cinnamon sticks soaked in rum. It is already tasting fantastic and will only get better and better until I start drinking it on the winter solstice and through the festive period. If you like dark ales, I can’t recommend Nog highly enough even if you are all grain brewer.
To my mind and taste buds, this is my favourite dark ale. It really improves with age. The last batch that I made, I had a couple of bottles left that were 9 months old, very smooth and well worth the wait.
