About Thomas Fawcett Malts
Thomas Fawcett & Sons is a seventh-generation family maltster based in Castleford, West Yorkshire, producing premium malts on the same site for over 200 years. Combining traditional floor malting with modern technology, they craft more than 30 different malts in small batches to ensure consistent quality, depth of flavour, and character.
Only the finest barley varieties—such as Maris Otter, Golden Promise, Halcyon and Pearl are used, alongside malted wheat, rye, and oats, giving brewers a full spectrum of ingredients to create distinctive beers. Their specialist roasting plants produce coloured and crystal malts of all styles, trusted by some of Britain’s most iconic breweries including Theakston’s, Timothy Taylor’s, Titanic, Sam Smith’s, Butcombe, and Hobsons.
In the Midlands, Sarah Hughes and Church End breweries (both Fawcett malt users) recently won top honours at the Great British Beer Festival, a testament to the quality that runs through every sack of Fawcett malt.
When you brew with Thomas Fawcett malts, you’re using the same ingredients that have shaped award-winning beers for generations.
Traditional Floor Malting
Floor malting is a traditional method where barley is spread out on malting floors and carefully turned by hand as it germinates. This slow, hands-on process allows maltsters to closely monitor every stage, producing malts with exceptional consistency, depth of flavour, and character that larger, automated systems often cannot achieve. At Thomas Fawcett & Sons, floor malting is combined with generations of expertise and modern germinating and kilning vessels (GKV), ensuring every batch meets their exacting standards. By producing malts in small, carefully controlled batches, Fawcett can extract the full potential of each barley variety, creating malts that add richness, complexity, and distinctive taste to your beer. It’s this meticulous approach that makes Fawcett’s floor malts prized by brewers across the UK, from iconic breweries to award-winning local producers.
