A Tribute to Proper Job Cornish IPA | 40 Pint Beer Kit

Tribute to Proper Job is a bold, hop forward IPA inspired by one of Cornwall’s best known modern beers. This full flavoured IPA combines a clean malt backbone with generous additions of American hops, delivering vibrant aromas and flavours of grapefruit, citrus, pine and tropical fruit.St Austell Proper Job Homebrew Beer Kit

Expect a bright golden beer with a firm hop character, refreshing bitterness and a crisp, dry finish. Layers of citrus and grapefruit are balanced by subtle malt sweetness, while the combination of Cascade, Chinook and Willamette hops creates a distinctive blend of fruity, floral and gently resinous flavours.

The Dark Rock Tribute to Proper Job Homebrew Beer Kit produces 40 pints of approximately 4.6% ABV IPA. Made with brewery quality liquid malt extract, carefully selected speciality grains, vacuum packed hop pellets and premium brewing yeast, it gives home brewers an easy way to create a classic Cornish style IPA at home.

If you’re looking for a St Austell Proper Job homebrew beer kit, this recipe delivers plenty of hop flavour and aroma while remaining highly drinkable.

The Commercial Brewery

St Austell Brewery was founded in 1851 by Cornishman Walter Hicks in St Austell, Cornwall. The brewery has remained independently owned and has become one of the South West’s best known brewers, producing a range of popular beers with strong links to Cornwall’s brewing heritage.

Proper Job was first brewed in 2006 and quickly established itself as one of the brewery’s most recognisable modern beers. Originally developed in the brewery’s small batch operation, it became known for its bold hop character and its interpretation of the traditional India Pale Ale style.

The beer helped popularise the more hop-forward IPA style among British drinkers, combining the heritage of traditional British brewing with the vibrant flavours associated with American hop varieties. Proper Job is available in different formats and strengths, with the cask version developed as a more sessionable interpretation of the original stronger IPA.

Please note: This is a Dark Rock Tribute homebrew beer kit inspired by the style and flavour profile of St Austell Proper Job. It is not manufactured by, affiliated with or endorsed by St Austell Brewery.

Tribute Series

The Dark Rock Tribute Series allows home brewers to create beers inspired by some of Britain’s best known commercial favourites. From traditional bitters and rich dark ales to golden pale ales and hop-forward IPAs, every recipe is carefully developed to capture the distinctive character of the beer that inspired it.

We carefully select and match premium liquid malt extract, speciality grains, hops and yeast to create the closest possible interpretation using an accessible homebrewing process. Every commercial brewery has its own unique water profile, brewing equipment, fermentation methods and house yeast, which means Dark Rock Tribute beers are not intended to be exact clones.

Instead, each recipe is designed to create an excellent beer inspired by the original’s style and flavour profile. We recommend brewing your Tribute beer alongside the commercial version and comparing the two to see just how close you can get.

Our experienced brewers carefully research and develop each Dark Rock recipe, selecting ingredients to create beers with genuine depth of flavour, aroma and character.

Brew it. Compare it. Enjoy it.

Why Choose Dark Rock Homebrew Beer Kits?

Dark Rock Homebrew Beer Kits make it easy to brew exceptional, full flavoured beer at home. They are ideal for both new and experienced home brewers who want premium results without the additional equipment and complexity of all-grain brewing.

Unlike basic beer kits that rely on pre-hopped extract, our premium extract kits use carefully selected ingredients to give you greater control over the finished beer. Each recipe combines brewery quality liquid malt extract, speciality grains, vacuum packed hop pellets and premium brewing yeast, allowing you to create layers of authentic malt flavour, hop aroma and bitterness.

The result is an enjoyable and accessible brewing process that produces beer with far more depth and character than many standard extract kits. You get to take a more active role in brewing your beer while still using standard homebrew equipment.

Every Dark Rock kit contains 3kg of brewery-quality liquid malt extract, with speciality grains and premium hops selected specifically for the style being brewed. Whether you prefer classic British bitters, refreshing pale ales, rich dark beers or bold IPAs, the range gives you the opportunity to brew a wide variety of distinctive beers at home.

Brewers Tips

This kit includes Pure Brew, a professional brewing enhancer designed to support healthy fermentation and improve brewing water. It provides essential yeast nutrients while helping neutralise chlorine and chloramine, which can contribute unwanted flavours to finished beer. For the best possible results, add the included Pure Brew as directed in the brewing instructions.

You will also receive Harris Starbrite Beer Finings, a vegan friendly beer clarifier that helps encourage yeast and other particles to settle, producing a brighter, clearer finished beer. This is particularly useful when kegging and can help reduce sediment transfer.

Your Proper Job style extract beer kit also includes a disposable hop T-bag to make adding and removing the hop pellets simple and convenient. For home brewers who want to upgrade their setup, a reusable stainless steel dry hopper can provide greater hop circulation and can be cleaned and reused for future brews.

Tip: This is a hop-forward IPA, so freshness matters. Avoid leaving the finished beer to condition for unnecessarily long periods. Once fully conditioned, enjoy it fresh to get the most from its vibrant citrus, grapefruit and hop aroma, with the beer served cool rather than excessively cold.

I got back into home brewing because my wife said I needed a hobby and she suggested birdwatching because I know the names of a few birds!

I tried a good quality canned kit from Brewferm and liked it so following suggestions on the Homebrew forum I stepped up to the part grain kit for my favourite bottled beer Proper Job from St Austell. I hadn’t tried the draught (more later) The kit was well designed and the instructions clear and easy to understand and I quite enjoyed the process. It’s been over a month since I stored it and I tried my first couple of bottles. I was quite pleased with the result as it didn’t have the dreaded “Homebrew Tang” of my first Brewferm which I since have attributed to the Harris Pure Brew additive. It was indeed a very good beer with a similar taste and colour to Proper Job but it left me a bit disappointed as it didn’t have the same hoppy bitterness I expected.

Now I had on the recommendation of Dark Rock added 400 grams of brewing sugar to increase the ABV of my brew to 5.5° which is the same as the bottled beer. I wonder if this altered the balance of the beer as perhaps this kit is designed to reproduce the qualities of the draught version? Just something I would love to hear comments about. I still haven’t managed to have a draught pint of Proper Job as the only place I spotted it was in “Patricks Place” a fake Irish pub in Bangor in N Wales and I was driving my grandchildren to the beach so couldn’t really stop! I now use Harris Pure Brew all the time as I am convinced it does improve the taste of any beer.

Great kit. This was my first part grain. The idea was to leave it in the bottle for 4 weeks before try. Not a chance. It definitely gets better the longer you leave it. I sent a few samples out to friends and family and everyone said how good it was. It tastes just like the real thing.

This kit is just fantastic! Really tasty beer, my favourite brew so far! I will definitely be brewing this again. It’s also made me very keen to try the other replica kits.

I want to congratulate you on creating this outstanding kit. I started brewing beer about four years ago. My first attempts were the Festival kits and I was very happy with the results. I then decided to move to all grain using the brew in a bag method. I was a little disappointed with the results. The beer lacked balance as they were quite sweet with little “hoppy” dry bitterness.

Recently I brewed the St Austell Proper Job Replica Kit and yesterday I sampled one. Even though it has only been conditioning for 3 weeks it is really on a different level from my previous brews. I have already started the Batham’s Bitter Style Replica and look forward to trying others.

Fantastic!

My first attempt at a Part Grain kit and I did make some mistake, but you would never know. The best home brewed beer I have ever made or tasted so far.
