The Commercial Brewery
Old Speckled Hen is produced by the Greene King Brewery, which was founded by Benjamin Greene in Bury St Edmunds in 1799. In 1836 Edward Greene took over the business and in 1887 it merged with Frederick William King’s brewing business to create Greene King. Greene King has grown over the years via mergers and acquisitions. It’s portfolio of businesses now includes Rayments Brewery (1961), the Magic Pub Company (1996), Hungry Horse Pub Restaurants(1996), Morland Brewery (1999), Old English Inns (2001), Morrells Brewery (2002), a large part of the Laurel Pub Company (2004), Ridleys Brewery (2005), Belhaven Brewery (2005), Hardys and Hansons (2006), The Loch Fyne fish restaurant chain (2007), Cloverleaf (2011), Realpubs (2011), the Capital Pub Company (2011) and the Spirit Pub Company (2015).
Please note: This is a Dark Rock Tribute homebrew beer kit inspired by the style and flavour profile of Old Speckled Hen. It is not manufactured by, affiliated with or endorsed by Greene King Brewery.

Tribute Homebrew Beer Kits
The Dark Rock Tribute Series allows you to brew beers inspired by some of Britain’s best-known commercial favourites. Each recipe is carefully researched and developed using selected malt extract, speciality grains, hops and yeast to recreate the individual character and flavour profile of the beer that inspired it.
Every commercial brewery has its own unique brewing water, equipment, fermentation methods and house yeast. For this reason, Dark Rock Tribute beers are not intended to be exact clones. Instead, they are carefully designed interpretations that allow you to brew an excellent beer inspired by the original.
We recommend making the beer, trying it alongside the commercial version and seeing how close you can get.
Our experienced brewers carefully select every ingredient to create premium homebrew beer kits with genuine flavour, aroma and character. From classic British bitters and golden ales to rich dark beers and modern IPAs, the Dark Rock Tribute Series gives you the opportunity to brew a wide range of commercial beer-inspired styles in your own home.
Brew it. Compare it. Enjoy it.
Why Choose Dark Rock Homebrew Beer Kits?
Dark Rock Beer Kits make it easy to brew exceptional, full flavoured beer at home. They are ideal for both beginners and experienced home brewers who want premium results without the time, equipment and complexity required for all grain brewing.
Unlike basic beer kits that use pre-hopped extract and require little more than mixing with water, our premium extract beer kits give you greater involvement in the brewing process. Each recipe uses carefully selected brewery quality liquid malt extract, speciality grains, premium hop pellets and premium brewing yeast, allowing you to build layers of authentic malt and hop flavour.
The result is an easy-to-use homebrew kit that bridges the gap between traditional extract brewing and more advanced brewing methods. You get more control over flavour and aroma while still using standard homebrew equipment. Our ingredients are carefully blended to suit each individual beer style, helping you create everything from crisp pale ales and classic bitters to rich stouts and bold IPAs.
Whether you are brewing your first 40 pint batch or have years of home brewing experience, Dark Rock Beer Kits provide a straightforward way to produce beer with genuine depth, aroma and character.
Brew with confidence. Brew with Dark Rock.

Brewers Tips
This kit includes Pure Brew, a professional enhancer that boosts fermentation and treats brewing water. It feeds yeast with vital nutrients, while removing Chlorine and Chloramine, which can cause off-flavours. Since water quality is key to great beer, we strongly recommend using Pure Brew in every brew for consistently better results.
To make brewing even easier, we’ve included a grain t-bag and hop t-bag.

I like the Real Speckled Hen beer so I thought I would give this tribute to Hen a try. I have to say that once the brew was completed and matured I was conveniently furloughed so had plenty of time in the garden to drink my Brew. It has a real malty / toffee flavour and is smooth to drink, . ‘Clucking’ good beer.
As a fan of old speckled hen had to try this and I’m very glad I did, the beer is a lovely colour quiet malty with a lovely taste which goes down very well! The keg is nearly empty but have a few bottles in reserve, highly recommend.
Did the Pepsi challenge with two friends. Between the three of us we could hardly tell the difference to the shop bought. I found the commercial bottle a little dryer, but all agreed the kit version was the better of the two. Colour wise my brew was a lot darker but who cares !. Was really surprised how close it is to the real thing, almost exact.
Easy to brew nice flavours
