What is Pilsner Lager?
Pilsner, also called pils or pilsener, is a pale lager beer style. It takes its name from Pilsen in the Czech Republic. Bavarian brewer Josef Groll first brewed it in 1842 using local ingredients. Pilsner Urquell still brews the original version in Pilsen today.
Many beer drinkers consider pilsner the perfect beer style. It pours into a tall glass with a fluffy white foam head. It shows a brilliant golden colour that creates an iconic appearance.
Pilsner delivers a sharp yet delicate drinking experience. Hop bitterness provides a spicy bite without overpowering the palate. Malt flavours stay subtle and balance the hop character. Pilsner ranges from pale straw to deep golden colour depending on recipe.
Spicy, floral hop flavours drive the global popularity of pilsner beer. Famous beers like Budweiser and Holsten Pils use the pilsner style. Pilsners often taste drier due to specific brewing techniques. Brewers sometimes use pilsner enzymes during fermentation to increase dryness.
So, when it comes to Pilsner versus Lager, you need to remember that Pilsner is a just a type of Lager, but a bit lighter in colour, slightly drier, and with a strong spicy flavour.

Food Pairing
Pilsner is an extremely versatile food beer. It’s got enough spicy oomph to tackle Thai and other fiery Asian foods, but it also won’t overwhelm more delicate dishes like shellfish or fresh goat cheese. It’s great with burgers or barbecue and perfect with pizza. The hops and carbonation help to keep your palate clean. Pilsner can also be a wonderful accompaniment to light desserts. Pils matches very well with creamy and spicy curries, tandoori dishes, Salmon, and shellfish.
Tips
We strongly recommend using Pure Brew with this kit to achieve commercial-quality beer. Pure Brew acts as a professional beer enhancer and improves fermentation performance. It feeds yeast essential nutrients and supports strong fermentation, even in low oxygen conditions. Additionally, it treats brewing water and removes chlorine and chloramine. These compounds can cause unwanted “homebrew” flavours in the finished beer. Brewing water quality plays a key role in final beer quality. However, many homebrewers often overlook this important factor. Pure Brew helps you easily condition water and improve fermentation results.
Furthermore, beer finings improve clarity and final presentation. Harris Beer Brite clears beer quickly and helps sediment settle at the bottom. This works especially well for bottles and barrels after fermentation. If you use Corny Kegs, clear the beer as much as possible before kegging. Finings help sediment and haze particles drop out more efficiently before packaging. Harris Starbrite provides a highly effective vegan-friendly fining option. As a result, homebrewers achieve clearer, better-looking, and better-tasting beer.

With everything you need included in the pack and with clear instructions, the beer was very easy to make. A strong fermentation with plenty of foam was evident after a day. I bottled some and barrelled the remainder. The resultant pilsner was superb, lovely and clear, a lovely hoppy nose with a nice lingering, citrus after-taste. Will definitely be brewing this or one of the other varieties in the Festival range.
This makes a lovely hoppy and crisp New Zealand pilsner. Mine was ready for drinking pretty quickly although it improved as it matured. The huge pilsner frothy head is impressive too.
